Website design tips for business owners

Good website design starts with a visitor’s task: understand the offer, judge the evidence and complete a useful next step on the device they have. Readability, contrast, navigation and layout all contribute. These guides move from that decision to scope, cost, briefing and launch checks.

Cost-related questions had about 439 coded mentions against 34 for AI in our one-agency, 12-month question bank: roughly 13 to one. The bank contains 194 distinct questions, with about 1,497 coded occurrences overall. Its highest-frequency non-cost question was whether to rebuild or improve an existing site. These are directional frequencies, not conversation order or a national survey (the full research).

A new look is the part everyone sees. The technical architecture decides whether people, Google and AI assistants can find and use what you publish. I set that direction before my team starts designing. We map existing pages and buyer journeys, keep useful URLs, and test the forms and redirects. AI helps us find issues faster. It doesn’t decide which enquiries the business can afford to lose.

If the foundation works, first scope the specific problem: content, navigation, speed, forms or an outdated visual layer. Compare the effort and risk of targeted changes with a rebuild. The redesign guide starts with that decision.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good business website?

A good business website helps the intended visitor understand the offer, assess credible proof and complete the next step. Test that journey on a phone and by keyboard. Clear text and accessible controls help people use the page; crawler and agent access need their own checks. The small business checklist makes the review concrete.

How often should a business redesign its website?

There is no fixed schedule, and age alone is not a reason. Redesign when the site’s foundation blocks the business: the platform is unsupported, the structure can’t hold your services, the brand has changed, or editing is so hard the team can’t ship. A five-year-old site that converts well needs care, not replacement.

What should a web design brief include?

What the site must achieve, who it is for, the pages and features it needs, who writes the content, the budget and timeline, what it connects to, and how it should work for search and AI assistants. A good brief is what makes quotes comparable. My web design brief guide has a template.

How do I compare website quotes?

Compare the scope, not the total. Check how many unique page templates are included, who moves the content, whether old URLs get redirects, what happens to SEO, and who looks after the site after launch. Two quotes for “the same website” are often apples and pears. The website cost guide lists what drives the price.

Does web design affect SEO?

Yes. Templates, mobile content, crawlable links and performance can affect discovery and experience. A redesign can also introduce broken routes or missing content. Map valuable URLs before changing them, then verify the release. An AI agent using a form is a different result from a search assistant citing the page. See how design affects SEO.
