Small business SEO: what still works in 2027

Small business SEO starts with the buyer: what they search, what you offer and whether the right page answers their question. Google’s AI features use its Search index and ranking systems. Other assistants have their own retrieval arrangements. Clear content, useful evidence and reliable access are a sensible foundation; rankings, citations and enquiries are separate results to measure.

When a business loses search traffic, blaming the latest update is easier than finding the fault. My starting point is the evidence: which pages and queries changed, whether the right URLs still resolve, and what changed on the site. My team uses data and AI across the WPO framework to find issues and act. The marketing strategy stays with the client’s team. We build the technical foundation it needs. The Google update history helps put a change in context.

AI answers are another test, not a solved formula. I build and test agents and workflows for our platform, internal tools and delivery work. A useful answer still needs a clear page and evidence it can use. For a small business, start with your service, your area and the people your customers already trust. Read my SEO strategy playbook, then local SEO ranking factors if you sell in a city or region.

If visits are not becoming enquiries, check the traffic source, the offer and the page together. More relevant visibility may help; a broken form or an unclear next step needs a different fix. Start with the CRO guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is SEO worth it for a small business?

It can be, when customers search for what you sell and the resulting enquiries justify the work. Compare qualified leads and cost over a period that fits your sales cycle. A ranking can change and does not guarantee enquiries. If demand is low or leads are urgent, assess referrals, partners or ads alongside the longer-term search plan.

How long does SEO take for a small business?

There is no dependable deadline. Recrawling, competition, the starting site and the work all matter. Google advises that SEO benefits can take months. Use a 30-day review to check implementation and early signals, then assess useful visits and qualified enquiries over your sales cycle.

What is local SEO?

Local SEO helps people find a business for place-related searches. Google identifies relevance, distance and prominence as its main local-result factors. Keep the Business Profile accurate, describe the service area honestly, and make useful local information easy to find. AI recommendation behaviour needs separate evidence. See local SEO ranking factors.

Does SEO still matter now that AI answers questions?

Yes for Google’s AI search: it uses the Search index and ranking systems, with related searches through query fan-out. An indexed page still needs the applicable inclusion settings and is not guaranteed display. Other products retrieve information differently. My SEO strategy playbook separates search visits, mentions, citations and leads.

Can I do SEO for my small business myself?

You can start with accurate business details, clear service pages, genuine reviews and Search Console. Choose one useful buyer question to answer well, then check whether people find the answer and take the next step.
