Web Design Best Practices That Still Matter in 2027

For 2027 planning, I would keep web design focused on clear hierarchy, readable type, accessible colour, fast pages, responsive layouts and a clear next step. Those were useful when I started building websites in 2005 and they remain useful now. AI search tools and browser agents add another reason to check both the content and the working interface.

The short answer

The web design practices I prioritise are clear visual hierarchy, readable typography, accessible colour contrast, enough white space, responsive layouts, fast loading and focused calls to action. Test whether visitors can complete the important tasks. Use Core Web Vitals, manual accessibility checks and confirmed enquiries or sales alongside usability feedback; no single score establishes design quality.

What are the most important web design best practices?

The most important web design best practices are to design for the visitor’s task, make content readable and accessible, build mobile-first, keep pages fast, use visual hierarchy and white space to guide attention, and give every page one clear call to action. Everything else, from colour palettes to animation, should support those basics rather than compete with them.

What are the core principles of web design?

The core principles of web design are visual hierarchy, colour, typography, layout, accessibility and content first. Hierarchy tells visitors what matters most. Colour sets mood and guides action. Typography makes content readable. Layout organises information. Accessibility makes the site usable by everyone. Content first means design serves the words, not the other way round.

These principles come from my 2016 guide for businesses, updated for how sites are built now:

  • Colour. Use a small palette with one accent colour reserved for actions. Check every text and background pair for contrast.
  • Availability and accessibility. The site must be up, fast and free of broken links, and usable with a keyboard and screen reader. Uptime monitoring and a link checker are part of design quality, not just IT.
  • Visual hierarchy. Use size, weight, colour and position to rank content. Headings should look like headings and read like answers to questions.
  • Typefaces. Start with a small, readable set. Two families is a useful constraint, rather than a rule every site must meet. My web typography guide goes deeper.
  • Layout. A consistent grid and spacing scale, with patterns repeated across pages so visitors learn the site once.
  • Content first. Design with real content, never placeholder text, and focus each page on one job.

The 2015 principles I wrote about are a useful reminder of how trends age. Vertical scrolling, flat design, responsive layouts, big type and a focus on content were all “new” then. Four of the five became permanent standards. Trends that serve readability and usability stick. Trends that serve novelty fade.

A reveal animation is a good example of style competing with the job. If a heading stays hidden until a script runs, a script failure can hide the answer as well as the effect. I want the content visible first, with motion added only where it helps. Test the page with reduced motion and without the animation script. Nobody chooses a supplier because a heading floated in. People do leave while they wait for one.

How do you evaluate the quality of a web design?

Evaluate a web design against its strategy, task completion, useful content and brand consistency. Ask representative visitors to find a service, understand its limits and complete a real or safely simulated enquiry. Measure confirmed outcomes and use performance and accessibility checks to diagnose barriers. Session recordings, if appropriate under your privacy arrangements, can add context.

StrategyDoes each page support a clear business goal and audience?A defined goal and primary action per key page

ContentIs the content readable, useful and up to date?Accurate answers, task-test feedback and a documented review of material facts
StyleIs the design consistent and on brand across pages?A style guide and reusable components

AccessibilityCan everyone use it?WCAG checks and keyboard testing
How to evaluate web design quality, with the evidence to look for

Nielsen Norman Group’s 2008 analysis of earlier browsing logs estimated how much visitors might read from time spent on a page. It was not a measurement that every visitor reads exactly 20% today. The useful design lesson is to make the answer easy to find while retaining enough detail for the task.

Why does white space matter in web design?

White space matters because it makes content easier to read, separates ideas, and draws attention to what matters most. Pages without enough space feel cluttered and make every element compete. Generous spacing around headings, paragraphs, images and calls to action improves comprehension and makes a site feel more premium, without adding anything.

Clutter is the most common mistake in the bad website design examples I review. The fix is almost always to remove and space out, not to add another section.

Is Material Design still relevant?

Material Design is still relevant as Google’s design system for Android and many web apps, now in its third version, Material 3. Its lasting lessons for any website are consistent components, clear elevation and layering, motion that explains state changes, and a strong grid. You do not need to adopt Material Design to apply those ideas.

When I wrote about Material Design in 2015, surfaces, depth, bold colour and meaningful motion were prominent ideas. For a business website, I would take the reusable-component approach and test it against the audience, rather than assume a Google design system fits every brand or web interface.

How do best practices change when AI assistants read your site?

Search retrieval and browser interaction are different jobs, and an AI product may combine them. Plain HTML text, descriptive links and clear headings help retrieval systems find and interpret an answer. Relevant structured data should match visible facts. None of those choices guarantees that a search engine will rank or cite a page.

Browser agents can combine screenshots, HTML and an accessibility tree. Google’s agent-friendly site guidance discusses all three. A banner over a button, an unlabeled field or an unstable layout can interrupt a task. My guide to an agent-ready website explains the practical checks: name the task, browser and account, retain permissions and human confirmation, and record what actually worked.

Good human accessibility and agent usability overlap, but neither proves the other. Keep important information available as accessible text, use meaningful controls and test keyboard access. Tabs and progressive disclosure can be useful when their content and state are accessible. My guide to website user experience covers the human tasks.

What to do next

  1. Run your key pages through the best practices checklist above.
  2. Check contrast and keyboard navigation on your homepage today.
  3. Look at your Core Web Vitals in PageSpeed Insights.
  4. Run a few representative tasks with customers or colleagues, then inspect the barriers before choosing a redesign.
  5. If the list is long, book a free call and my team will help you prioritise.

Frequently asked questions

What is good web design?

Good web design helps visitors understand what you offer and take the next step quickly, on any device. It combines clear hierarchy, readable type, accessible colour, fast loading and focused calls to action. A good design looks professional, but its real test is whether visitors find what they need and act.

What are the 5 basic principles of web design?

Five basic principles of web design are visual hierarchy, consistency, readability, accessibility and simplicity. Hierarchy shows what matters most. Consistency helps visitors learn the site once. Readability keeps them reading. Accessibility makes the site usable for everyone. Simplicity removes anything that does not help the visitor or the business.

How often should web design best practices be reviewed?

Review your website against best practices at least once a year, and after any major change to your offer, audience or platform. Browsers, devices, accessibility standards and search engines keep changing. Small, regular improvements based on data usually deliver more than a full redesign every few years.

Does good web design improve conversions?

Good web design improves conversions when it removes friction: unclear messaging, slow pages, confusing navigation and weak calls to action. Design changes should be measured against conversion rates, not opinions. The biggest gains usually come from clarity and speed rather than from new visuals.

Do web design best practices affect SEO?

Many design choices support search discovery and usability: crawlable content, descriptive links, mobile content parity and good performance. They are part of a broader search assessment, rather than a ranking formula. Clear structure also makes facts easier to retrieve; citation and ranking outcomes still need to be measured.
